镁”能循环 

 MAGNESIUM BATTERY & DESALINATION DEVICE

There is no doubt that we need an energy cycle free of fossil fuels that otherwise emit greenhouse gases causing global warming. Although solar energy is the ultimate renewable energy source, it is far from fully realized. Furthermore, since sunlight is available only in the clear daytime, it cannot be an alternative to thermal power stations unless effective and large power storage systems are available.

In 2004, we proposed to use the chemical potential of magnesium as such an energy reservoir. Heat and hydrogen from the reaction of magnesium with water are used for turbines, reciprocal engines, fuel cells, and so on. The remaining “ash,” MgO or Mg(OH)2, has to be deoxidized in order to make the energy cycle renewable. The deoxidization process is driven by the energy from a solar-energy-pumped laser, a laser diode powered by a wind power, hydraulic power or other sources. Since laser radiation can be focused into a small spot, a very high temperature exceeding 4000 K, needed for MgO deoxidization can easily be obtained. In addition, the temperature at distance of 10 times spot size becomes lower than 1/100 of the spot temperature and hence the wall load is negligible. Once such MgO deoxidization technology is developed, unsteady solar power can be stored in Mg form to provide a stable supply of energy.

We proposed a new battery using magnesium. The magnesium is used in the form of thin film or thin plate and we achieved 1300 Ah/kg which is 9 times larger than 150Ah/kg of Lithium-Ion battery.

Conventional magnesium air battery uses thick plate of Mg but after a surface layer is oxidized, rest of the part remains not reacted. This was the origin of low efficiency. Using thin layer of magnesium, however, almost all of the magnesium is fully used.

In the conventional magnesium battery, reaction product (insulator) as shown in Fig.1 melts in the electrolyte and thus large amount of electrolyte was required. This makes the distance between anode and cathode larger. Such large amount of electrolyte causes large electric resistance leading to small electrical output.

Our driven-type battery can remove the reaction product enclosed in the separator(Fig.2) from the reaction system and electrolyte stays clean. Water is only required to react with magnesium and hence only a small amount of electrolyte is sufficient.

Further feature is that magnesium fuel is continuously inserted and reaction residue is extracted(Fig.3,4). It is important that this fuel cell can stop at any time and can restart. In addition, fuel is kept outside of the battery and hence size of battery is independent of storing energy. For example, as for the same output power kW, battery size for 20kWh and 40kWh is the same but only fuel amount is different,

Save the Earth 

Nowadays typhoon is growing it’s size and there frequently occurred anomalous atmospheric phenomena. No one can deny that it is a consequence of change of terrestrial environment owing to CO2 emission. The difference of vaporization between toropical area and northern area leads to the difference of salinity which drives global ocean circulation. There is a movie in which the global warming reduces such salinity difference and finally stops the global circulation and entire American continents are freezed. This is not science fiction but has solid scientific basis. Some body, who insists there is no global warming but is cooling, may not understand the real picture of Earth which stands with delicate balance.

We are obliged to pass over this Earth to our descendants as it is. We created the system to waste fossil fuels ,that were formed during millions or billions of years, in only 200 years. We must show how to recover the Earth as soon as possible.
